All About Video Player, Codec and Converter (Part 2)


The word codec is a combination of word “compressor-decompressor” or more commonly with the “encoder-decoder”. Is a software or hardware that has the ability in terms of encoding and decoding data stream.

Encoding is the process of changing the form of signal or bitstream data into a form that is acceptable for data transmission or storage of data by using a specific algorithm, while the reverse process is called decoding. The purpose of encoding is as standardization, speed-up (on transmission), secrecy, security, or saving space by shrinking size (compression).

Especially in the field of audio-video, codec more devoted to standardization and to reduce the size of the digital audio samples and video frames in order to speed up transmission and save storage space. The goal of all codec designers is to maintain audio and video quality while compressing the binary data further.

Lossy and Lossless Compression

Most codecs are lossy, in order to get a reasonably small file size. There are lossless codecs as well, but for most purposes the almost imperceptible increase in quality is not worth the considerable increase in data size. The main exception is if the data will undergo more processing in the future, in which case the repeated lossy encoding would damage the eventual quality too much.

Example of lossy audio compression, such as MP3, Advanced Audio Coding (AAC), Windows Media Audio (WMA), Vorbis (OGG), AC3 and DTS. Example of lossless audio compression such as FLAC, WavPack, Monkey’s Audio (APE), and Meridian Lossless Packaging (MLP).

Example of lossy video compression, such as MPEG1/2, DivX, Xvid, H264,  Windows Media video (WMV) and Real Video (RMVB). Example of lossless video compression such as DV, HuffYUV, CorePNG, and FFV1.


A container format is a computer file format that can contain various types of data, compressed in a manner of standardized codecs. The container file is used to be able to identify and interleave (set a value on how often the audio and video streams are “synchronized”) the different data types. In most cases, the file header, most of the metadata and the synchro chunks are specified by the container format

Simpler container formats can contain different types of audio codecs, while more advanced container formats can support audio, video, subtitles, chapters, and metadata along with the synchronization information needed to play back the various streams together.
